1. On this occasion Bodkter attempted to photograph Old Abe on the roof of the Capitol in order to use the brightest light available. Sensing its freedom, Old Abe tried to escape by flying away. Bodtker sharply jerked Old Abe's chain, nearly killing the majestic eagle mascot. This photograph was taken later in Bodtker's studio. Referred to as the "Sanitary" photograph, proceeds from its sale at the Chicago Northwest Sanitary Fair (1865) benefited disabled Civil War veterans.
